HRD/NHC CHART Seminar – Lisa Bucci, CIMAS & AOML/HRD – 19 May 2016

Lisa Bucci presented a seminar on “Impacts of an Airborne Doppler Wind Lidar on Tropical Cyclone Analysis Forecasts.” that is available on the NHC science presentation web site. Abstract The initial structure of Tropical Cyclones (TCs) in models remains a limiting factor for TC forecasts. Instruments flown on NOAA's P3 Orion Hurricane Hunter Aircraft provide …

AOML and HRD researchers at 32nd AMS Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology, San Juan, Puerto Rico – 10-14 April 2016

Twenty-three AOML and HRD scientists participated in the recent 32nd AMS Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology in San Juan, PR, as authors or co-authors on 36 presentations and 11 posters. Roughly 650 presentations (452 oral presentations in 70 sessions and 196 posters in 2 session) were submitted to the conference. Of the 440 TC-related presentations …

2015 Hurricane Field Program wrap-up

Although the 2015 hurricane season ending on Nov. 30th was by most measures a 'quiet' one, NOAA's annual Hurricane Field Program, led by AOML's Hurricane Research Division entailed plenty of activity and produced several milestones.  HRD scientists participated in 30 research, reconnaissance and surveillance flights, either on-board the NOAA aircraft or remotely from the ground.  In …

Radar animation of NOAA flights into Danny and Erika

This year, real-time radar imagery from the P3's lower-fuselage radars were transmitted to the ground in real time for the first time, so that forecasters at the National Hurricane Center could see the structure of the storms far away from land.  ftp://ftp.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/pub/blog/meetings/2015/HFP/LF_radar_earthrel/20150821Iz_ea_ref.mp4 is an animation of all the P3 flights into Hurricane Danny and Tropical …

HRD researchers discussed the results from the 10 P-3, 3 G-IV, and 2 Global-Hawk missions into Hurricane Danny and Tropical Storm Erika. The agenda for the discussion was: Overview of missions (Rogers) Accomplishments Science objectives and opportunities Hurricane Danny (5 P-3 and 2 G-IV mission) TC in shear (Reasor) Tropical Storm Erika (5 P-3, 1 …

Doppler radar quick-looks from 2:00 AM P-3 flight into Tropical Storm Danny, 24 August 2015

As Tropical Storm Danny continued to weaken just east of the Leeward Islands (see the black lines outlining the islands) a NOAA P-3 mission collected airborne Doppler radar data to use in initializing and evaluating model guidance. The figure below depicts the aircraft flight track (P-3: yellow line) superposed on real-time lower fuselage radar and visible …

Doppler radar quick-looks from 2:00 PM P-3 flight into Tropical Storm Danny, 23 August 2015

As Tropical Storm Danny continued to weaken 300 km east of the Leeward Islands a NOAA P-3 mission collected airborne Doppler radar data to use in initializing and evaluating model guidance. The figure below depicts the aircraft flight track (P-3: yellow line) superposed on real-time lower fuselage radar and infrared satellite imagery. Included here you see …
