Hurricane Field Program Update — Tuesday, September 3, 2019, 7pm EDT

The tropics are even more active today, with three tropical cyclones (Hurricane Dorian, Tropical Storm Fernand, and Tropical Depression Eight) spinning in the Atlantic and keeping us busy.  NHC has tasked NOAA49 for its final synoptic surveillance missions around Dorian, departing from Lakeland at 0130 EDT (0530 UTC) and recovering there about 8 hours later.  The goal is to sample, the environment directly around Dorian, as well as the ridge to the north, to improve model forecasts.Screen Shot 2019-09-03 at 9.10.13 PM.png

In addition, NOAA42 will conduct an EMC-tasked mission into Dorian to gather data for assimilation into numerical models, takeoff from Lakeland at 1600 EDT (2000 UTC), recovery back there about 8 hours later.  We expect to resume two-per-day missions Thursday.
