2018 Hurricane-Related Anniversaries

In 2018 we will observe the following tropical cyclone-related anniversaries. 2013 5th anniversary Despite preseason forecasts for an active hurricane season this year sees the fewest Atlantic hurricanes since 1982 and the first season since 1968 with no Category 2 hurricanes of higher. Hurricane Manuel strikes the Pacific coast of Mexico, causing 123 deaths and … Continue reading 2018 Hurricane-Related Anniversaries

HRD Seminar – Dr. Sean PF Casey, CIMAS and AOML/HRD – 15 February 2018

Dr. Casey presented a seminar titled "Geostationary Hyper-Spectral Sounder (Geo-HSS) Constellation:  A Global Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) Assessment". Abstract Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) can provide quantitative assessments of potential impacts of new observation sources, without the instrument actually being built in some cases. This presentation describes the set-up of global-scale OSSEs, from the … Continue reading HRD Seminar – Dr. Sean PF Casey, CIMAS and AOML/HRD – 15 February 2018

HRD Seminar – Scott B. Sieron, Pennsylvania State University – 12 February 2018

Scott presented a seminar titled  “Mesoscale tropical cyclone model EnKF data assimilation of all-sky satellite radiances: advancing from IR to microwave”. Abstract Development with the WRF tropical cyclone configuration and EnKF data assimilation system at Penn State is ongoing towards supporting the direct assimilation of top-of-atmosphere microwave emission observations in all sky conditions. These observations relate … Continue reading HRD Seminar – Scott B. Sieron, Pennsylvania State University – 12 February 2018
