NOAA’s jet is ready to fly into Joaquin today

The G-IV is scheduled to fly a synoptic surveillance mission today with a take-off time of 1730 UTC (1:30PM local) from MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, FL for an eight hour mission. The jet will fly around Hurricane Joaquin and will sample the upper/mid-level trough over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico and the area just north of it. The data collected from these types of flights helps us understand the atmospheric weather conditions that may influence Joaquin as it tracks over the ocean. The data also goes into NOAA’s weather forecasts models to improve the track and intensity forecasts. Here is the proposed G-IV flight track. The dots along the flight track indicate the dropwindsonde launch locations.
