NOAA’s P3 hurricane hunter aircraft is gearing up for another flight into Tropical Storm Erika

NOAA’s P3 hurricane hunter aircraft will fly a Saharan Air Layer Experiment (SALEX) into Tropical Storm Erika. The proposed flight track is shown below. The P3 will depart at 2:00AM local time from Barbados and fly a six hour research mission. The data collected from this flight will improve our understanding of how the dry air interacts with the storm. The flight track is shown below. The dots on the flight track (shown in green) represent the aircraft turn points. The red dots in the figure show the locations that launch weather balloons twice a day while the purple dots are the locations that launch balloons once a day.
