NOAA’s P3 hurricane hunter aircraft set to gather oceanic data ahead of Danny

NOAA’s P-3 hurricane hunter aircraft will take off from Grantley Adams Int’l Airport in Barbados to fly a pre-storm Ocean Survey mission. The P3 will depart at 10:00AM local time and fly a nine hour mission. The proposed flight track is shown below. This mission will collect data to understand how the ocean and atmospheric play a role in the life cycle of a tropical cyclone. They will launch Airborne EXpendable BathyThermograph (AXBT) that measure ocean temperature as a function of depth and GPS dropwindsondes. The dots on the flight track (shown in green) represent the aircraft turn points. The red dots in the figure show the locations that launch weather balloons twice a day while the purple dots are the locations that launch balloons once a day.
