HRD researcher describes NOAA’s use of SATCOM to improve hurricane forecasts to 2012 INMARSAT Aviation Conference, Miami, FL, 14 June 2012

Dr. John Gamache made a presentation at the 2012 INMARSAT Aviation Conference in Miami about NOAA’s use of the SATCOM data transfer and internet connectivity.  He discussed the different types of data that were transmitted in real time from the NOAA aircraft to the ground, with a special emphasis on the airborne Doppler radar data.  He also briefly mentioned the less demanding uses of the satellite link such as internet chat and tweeting from the aircraft.  The main point he made was how important Satellite internet connectivity was to the future of nowcasting and forecasting of hurricanes, especially the future of intensity forecasting.
