Piney Point lighthouse
On August 23, 1933 a category-1 hurricane made landfall at Norfolk, VA. Its center travelled up Chesapeake Bay and caused a large storm surge up its tributaries including the Potomac River. Combined with heavy rains, $27 million in damage was caused, much of it in the Washington, DC area, and some thirty deaths are attributed to this storm. The resort hotel at Piney Point, MD (long a Presidential retreat) was wiped out.
An interesting side note, Joe Duckworth (then a pilot for Eastern Air Transport) managed to bring his New York to Washington cargo flight into Hoover Air Field just before the storm closed it down. A decade later he would pilot the first deliberate flight into a hurricane’s eye.
